National Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set

The National Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set is one of the fundamental building blocks of the information technology of Tibetan language, without this standard, Tibetan language won’t be processed smoothly in the computer world.

July 1995, China National Technical Supervision Bureau, the Minister of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Industry together organized a group of experts, including the main members of yalasoo, to develop the National Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set. After three years of efforts, this standard was finally formulated and formally released in 1998. That laid a solid foundation for Tibetan information technology and Tibetan language processing.

yalasoo played a decisive role in the process of development of this standard. Earlier 1995, Tashi Tsering, the director of yalasoo, published a paper entitled "On International Standard of Tibetan Encoded Character Set" on the magazine "China Tibetology". This academic paper indicated the direction of the study on the Tibetan encoded character set. It is the only academic article in the world that involved in the study of Tibetan encoding. The national standard, the international standard and the Unicode standard of Tibetan encoded character set, are all based on this article.

This project, National Standard for Tibetan Encoded Character Set, has been fully funded by the Chinese government.
